1. Explore picturesque alleyways
Saint-Dyé-sur-Loire is more than just a village on the banks of the Loire; it's the former logistics hub of the Renaissance. We discovered a town with a fascinating past, which served as the river port for the Château de Chambord. The materials needed to build the château had been shipped here since the 16th century. As you stroll through the narrow streets, you'll notice that the village has preserved traces of this prosperous era. Old houses, cobblestones and a tranquil atmosphere bear witness to this rich heritage. Take the time to stroll through the streets and imagine the hustle and bustle that reigned when the boatmen unloaded the tufa stone destined for King François I.

2. Visit Saint-Dyé Church
The Church of Saint-Dyé dominates the village landscape with its imposing architecture. We were impressed by the dimensions of this religious building, which bears witness to the town's past importance. The church is dedicated to Saint Deodatus, the Irish monk who evangelized the region in the 7th century. You can admire its massive facade, which overlooks the Loire and offers a remarkable view of the river. The interior also deserves your attention, with its vaulted ceilings and preserved architectural features. The site retains a serene atmosphere conducive to meditation, and is a precious testimony to the region's religious heritage.

3. Follow in the footsteps of the ramparts: the fortified enclosure and the Tour du Flan
At the end of the 13th century, the town strengthened its defenses with a wall flanked by 14 towers and 3 majestic gates called Orleans, Chambord and Blois. We admired the Tour du Flan, a remarkable vestige of this medieval defensive system. You'll also be able to guess the location of the old posterns, which provided secret passageways for the besiegers. These fortifications bear witness to the strategic importance of the village in the Middle Ages. A stroll along the ancient ramparts offers a captivating historical perspective and a glimpse of the fortified town's layout. The ancient stones tell the story of several centuries of military and commercial history.

The Maison de la Loire is an essential educational stop-off point for understanding the Loire ecosystem. Here we discovered the natural riches of the Royal River through interactive exhibits suitable for all ages. You'll explore the flora and fauna characteristic of the banks of the Loire, from migratory birds to the fish that inhabit the river. The center also explains how flooding works and the challenges of hydraulic management. The activities on offer enable children and adults alike to gain a better understanding of the biodiversity of the Loire. It's the ideal place to prepare a nature outing or simply to add an environmental dimension to your visit to the village.

5. Take a stroll along the quays of the Loire
The quays of Saint-Dyé-sur-Loire invite you to take a soothing stroll along the river. We really enjoyed this walk, which showed us how the port used to receive tufa and other materials destined for the Château de Chambord. You'll discover the old port facilities and installations that bear witness to the intense boating activity of the 16th to 19th centuries. Today, the local population still lives to the rhythm of the river's rise, a natural phenomenon that shapes local life. Information panels along the way explain the history of river navigation. The riverbanks also offer beautiful views of the Loire and its islets, particularly photogenic at sunrise or sunset.

6. Touring the Loire à Vélo
Saint-Dyé-sur-Loire is an ideal stopover on the Loire à Vélo itinerary. We took this cycle route through the village, which offers a variety of landscapes between the river and the surrounding natural areas. You'll pedal along the well-maintained paths that run along the Loire to nearby towns. Hiking enthusiasts will also find wild trails to the Boulogne forest, which borders the Chambord estate. These trails enable you to observe the flora and fauna of the Loire in their natural environment. The village offers a wide range of services for cyclists, with bike rental points close by. It's a pleasant, environmentally-friendly way to discover the region.

7. Discover the iconic Château de Chambord
Saint-Dyé-sur-Loire is the historic gateway to the Château de Chambord, just 5km away. We were stunned by the castle's impressive proportions. Whether on the estate or in the 70 rooms open to visitors, everything seems huge! While some rooms are empty, a large proportion are furnished thanks to the estate's acquisition policy. Some are reconstructions, others are thematic, providing a better understanding of the castle's history and court life.

How to get there
By car from Blois or Orléans via the D951, which runs alongside the Loire. Trains run to Blois station, then you can reach Saint-Dyé-sur-Loire by bus or by bike via La Loire à Vélo. Tours departing from Blois or Tours often include Saint-Dyé-sur-Loire and the Château de Chambord.
Parking in Saint-Dyé-sur-Loire
The village offers free parking close to the center and the docks. There is a parking lot near the church and another along the Loire. Parking is generally easy, even in peak tourist season.

How long and when?
Allow 1h30 to 2h to discover the village on foot, more if you visit the Maison de la Loire or plan a bike ride. Spring and autumn offer magnificent light on the river and more moderate tourist numbers. Summer is the perfect time to take full advantage of the nature activities and events on offer at the Maison de la Loire.
Tour directions, map and difficulty
We recommend you start in the historic center and church, then walk along the quays to the Maison de la Loire. The streets are sometimes cobbled, but the village is still easily accessible. Bring good walking shoes if you're considering the hiking trails to the Boulogne forest. A map of the village is available from the Blois-Chambord tourist office.
Visiting with children
Saint-Dyé-sur-Loire lends itself well to a family visit. The Maison de la Loire offers educational workshops for young visitors, who can discover the flora and fauna of the river in a fun way. The quayside is a pleasant place to stroll in complete safety, and children generally enjoy cycling on La Loire à Vélo. The proximity of the Château de Chambord also makes it possible to combine a visit to the village with a visit to a spectacular monument.
Restaurants
We haven't yet tested any restaurants in Saint-Dyé-sur-Loire. In the heart of the village, Le Bistrot d'à Côté seems to be appreciated for its friendly atmosphere. Manoir de Bel Air offers an interesting gastronomic option.
