Where to stay in Angers: best districts
Why stay in Angers?
A medieval city, the historic capital of Anjou and a major metropolis in the Loire Valley, Angers is a city of art and history and France's 1st green city. Angers vineyards, gardens, châteaux... In our opinion, Angers is a good starting point for visiting many of the Loire castles, less than 1 hour away by car.
It's one of the most popular places to stay in the Loire Valley!
Angers' best places to stay: map
Here's our map to help you get your bearings, with the main areas to stay in Angers:
Staying in Angers hypercentre
Angers city center is one of our favorite neighborhoods in which to set down our suitcases. With its narrow streets and half-timbered houses, it's by definition a dynamic, central district. We discovered a multitude of shops and restaurants. But above all, the halles d'Angers, where fresh local produce jostle for position on the stalls to delight our eyes and taste buds! Another interesting option in this area is a walk along the banks of the Maine River.
Benefits:
- Ideal for visiting major cultural sites such as the Musée Jean-Lurçat, the Cathédrale Saint-Maurice and the Château d'Angers (yes, a fortress right in the center of town!).
- Hypercentre, historic district
- Walks along the banks of the Maine, a tributary of the Loire
- Starting point for cycle paths and bike rides
Disadvantages:
- Noise as Angers district in motion
- Difficult to park in narrow streets and pedestrian squares
- Higher cost of certain accommodations
Our favorite hotels:
- Bed and Breakfast Hotel L'Oisellerie - view photos and availability
- Hotel 21 Foch - see photos and availability
- Hôtel D'Anjou - see photos and availability
Staying in the La Fayette-Eblé / Gare d'Angers district
Close to the city center and south of the Angers Saint-Laud SNCF train station, the La Fayette-Eblé district owes its name to the Marquis de La Fayette, a French officer and politician who left his mark on the American War of Independence in the 18th century. It's a vibrant, dynamic district with a market and numerous shops in its main square (Place La Fayette). We spotted a shared orchard. A great initiative by the city to encourage free picking in public spaces and a reconnection with nature.
Benefits:
- Shops, craftsmen and market on the square
- Within walking distance of Angers train station
- Main roads and easy parking, tramway stops
- Residential neighborhood, gardens, shared orchards
Disadvantages:
- Traffic jams with lots of passing vehicles and public transport
- Higher cost of certain accommodations
- Noise as Angers district in motion
Our favorite hotels:
- Hôtel de France - see photos and availability
- Hotel Novotel Angers Centre Gare - view photos and availability
- Hotel Odalys City Angers Centre Gare - see photos and availability
Staying near Angers
All around Angers, opt for calm and greenery. Away from the historic heart and railway station area, it's an invitation to reconnect with nature and with ourselves! But also to enjoy the great outdoors. By staying in the Angers area, you'll also be closer to the famous Loire castles, many of which are less than an hour's drive away.
Benefits:
- Greener areas away from the hustle and bustle of downtown
- To the north, near Parc Terra Botanica and its magnificent gardens
- On the south side, cycle along the banks of the Loire or visit the Château de Brissac.
- To the west, head for the sumptuous Château de Serrant or the famous Château de Nantes.
- On the east side, discover Château d'Ussé, Château de Villandry and Château de Saumur.
Disadvantages:
- Away from the city's main attractions
- Need a car or bike to get around more easily
- Less choice of accommodation
Our favorite hotels:
- Hotel Château des Forges - see photos and availability
- Hotel Domaine du Moulin Cavier - see photos and availability
Other useful tips to keep in mind
- The summer season brings a host of events to the region, providing an ideal opportunity to discover local culture and artistic dynamism. But when you think of events, you think of tourists! So book your accommodation as soon as possible by checking out the top-rated establishments in Angers.
- Angers is also a popular city in the region. It's also a good starting point for visiting the Chateaux of the Loire Valley, but we strongly advise you to rent a car if you don't have one, so you'll have more freedom of movement.
- In the historic district, the alleyways are sometimes narrow. Part of the city center is pedestrianized, so traffic can sometimes be a little heavy or complex if you're driving through this area.
- Get around as much as you can by bike to take advantage of our pleasant, unspoilt environment. The city of Angers is very well equipped for 2-wheelers with cycle paths. You can even visit some castles by bike.
- To make the most of the city, opt for the Angers City Pass, which gives you access to over 25 tours, discounts on public transport and even 2 hours' parking. Find out more here.
- Discover the city in a different, less heady way by opting for a guided tour - see options.
- Taste the local gastronomy and discover the famous Loire Valley wine route. Some bike tours around Angers combine wine tasting!

Somewhere between a large bourgeois family home and a small château, you can feel the passion of the antique dealer who ensured the impeccable restoration of this home built in the 19th century by Germain Bouyonnet-Belize, an industrialist from Anjou.
