The city is renowned for its exceptional heritage, including the famous Château de Saumur overlooking the town. Beyond its unique medieval architecture, we were seduced by its troglodytic cellars and renowned vineyards. It's a Mecca for gastronomy and wine!

Staying in downtown Saumur
The town center revolves around the famous Château de Saumur, which overlooks the valley. With its picturesque architecture, cobbled streets and well-preserved historic buildings, we were won over by its authentic character. We also loved strolling along the banks of the Loire.
Benefits:
- Location: a wide range of restaurants, hotels, bars and shops in the immediate vicinity.
- Activities: you'll see no time go by as you stroll through the city center, where most of the town's tourist attractions are concentrated: château, banks of the Loire, cellars, museums.
- Architecture: like us, you'll fall under the spell of the old town.
- Journey: you won't miss your train, as you'll be close to the station.
Disadvantages:
- Parking: it's more difficult to park in Saumur's hypercentre, especially during the summer months.
- Tourism: the city's new tourism dynamic means that visitors flock to Saumur during the high season (the Château de Saumur welcomed over 110,000 visitors in 2022).

Staying east of Saumur
As you head east away from the medieval city, you'll discover vineyards and local villages. Our experience at the Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud left a deep impression on us. We think it's a must-do in Saumur!
Benefits:
- Viewpoints: magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Would you like to wake up facing the vineyards?
- Quiet: hotels to the east of Saumur are quieter. Nature walks are very pleasant here.
- History: you'll be close to the famous Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud. A visit not to be missed!
Disadvantages:
- Remoteness: you won't be able to access Saumur as easily as if you were right in the center of town.
- Travel: you'll need a vehicle to get around the surrounding countryside.
- Offer: you'll have less choice in terms of hotels, restaurants and local shops.

Staying south-west of Saumur
To the south-west of Saumur, you'll discover the villages of Douée-la-Fontaine, Vaudelnay and Louresse-Rochemenier. The latter houses the Rochemenier Troglodytic Village Museum. Find out more here.

- Tranquillity: the area is quieter and more peaceful. Nature walks are very pleasant here.
- History: you'll be close to the troglodytic village of Rocheminier. It's a great idea to visit with your kids!
- Accommodation: if you like unusual experiences, you can choose to sleep in a barrel or in an old troglodytic dwelling!
Disadvantages:
- Remoteness: you won't be able to access Saumur as easily as if you were right in the center of town.
- Travel: you'll need a vehicle to get around the surrounding countryside.
- Offer: you'll have less choice in terms of hotels, restaurants and local shops.

Other useful tips to keep in mind
During the summer season, Saumur is a popular destination for tourists on the Loire bike trail. We recommend that you book your accommodation as early as possible to take advantage of the best rates, and that you use the Booking platform, as hotel calendars are regularly updated.
To get around Saumur and the surrounding area, we strongly recommend you use a car or bicycle. If you're staying in the town center, it's a 12-minute drive to the Cadre Noir, and a 20-minute drive to the Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud. These are 2 of the main things to do near the town. What's more, it's not easy to find locally available cabs. Don't hesitate to rent a car to make the most of this destination!

Why stay there?
Located close to the main tourist attractions, including the Château de Saumur, the hotel is an ideal base for exploring the city. It's a pleasant cocoon nestled in the heart of the old town, where we were delighted to take refuge! Each of the 14 rooms is unique, with its own aesthetic. The bathroom walls are adorned with mosaics signed by great artists such as Paloma Picasso.
We were particularly taken with its warm, welcoming setting. Some of the decor was highly original, or made reference to the equestrian world. The lighting effects and colorful furniture contrasted with the subdued ambience of the rooms. We experienced a pure moment of relaxation and well-being.

Even before entering Château la Marquise, take time to observe the building's Belle Époque architecture. Nestled in a superb green setting right in the center of town, we found the setting charming. The site is also steeped in history.
The establishment boasts a magnificent Roman-inspired spa area, and a beautiful outdoor swimming pool. If you're looking for tranquility and relaxation, we highly recommend a stay here. Looking for relaxation? We highly recommend staying at Hôtel Anne d'Anjou. Combining comfort and elegance, we had a wonderful time at this establishment on the banks of the Loire. Its central location was a real bonus for us.
Take advantage of the heated outdoor pool, sauna and Jacuzzi for total relaxation. From the balcony of our room, we had a breathtaking view of the river flowing peacefully below. Gourmets beware: the excellent Restaurant L'Essentiel hides in its inner courtyard.

4. Hôtel Fontevraud L'Ermitage (4 stars, Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud)
Why stay there?
Do you dream of sleeping in Europe's largest monastic city? The Hôtel Fontevraud L'Ermitage is an integral part of the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud. Le Prieuré Saint Lazare has been completely reinvented by interior designers as a contemporary 4-star establishment. It has 54 rooms that are fairly uncluttered, but respectful of the historic atmosphere. We appreciated the sober decor, to let the place shine in all its splendor. Once night falls, the lighting effects are breathtaking. Each illuminated building is revealed in a new light.
For an unforgettable culinary experience in an atypical setting, we recommend you also try the abbey's gourmet restaurant. Enjoy the excellent seasonal cuisine of Michelin-starred chef Thibaut Ruggeri!

During our stay at Logis Demeure de la Vignole, we enjoyed an extraordinary experience in enchanting surroundings. Nestled in the heart of the Loire Valley vineyards, this establishment is sure to leave a lasting impression.
In a unique troglodytic setting, you'll discover an incredible indoor swimming pool. If you look up, you'll see the rock that forms an integral part of the dwelling. We particularly liked this atypical, fairytale setting! The care taken to decorate our room made our stay all the more pleasant. We were totally convinced by the breakfast, which featured local produce.

Combining comfort and conviviality, Hôtel Le Londres appealed to us for its meticulous, warm decor. Its strategic location is also a great advantage during a stay in Saumur. We highly recommend this charming establishment to families. In fact, it offers apartments with fully-equipped kitchens. You'll save money on your meals.

If you're looking for more economical, conveniently located accommodation, we recommend staying at the Best Western Adagio Hotel. It is located on the banks of the Loire on the Île d'Offard.
In addition to its strategic location near the train station and city center, the establishment offers a cocooning atmosphere. We also enjoyed the riverside promenade leading to the hotel.

Nestled in the heart of the Joly family vineyards, we have fond memories of this unique interlude. Our accommodation was very warm and intimate. We felt instantly at home. The unmistakable scent of wine barrels made the moment all the more pleasant. This cozy little nest, unique in its kind, totally seduced us!

10. Hôtel Le Canter Saumur (2 stars, west of town center)
Why stay there?
If you're looking for less expensive accommodation close to the city center, Hotel Le Canter is the right option. Rates are generally affordable. You'll have easy access to a number of tourist attractions, including the Cadre Noir and the Musée des Champignons.
Although more economical, this hotel still offers comfort and conviviality. In the absence of an on-site restaurant, the hoteliers offer an artisanal Breton canning service. You can order home-cooked jars made from local produce, including starter-main course-dessert.
