In winter, the Loire Valley has a temperate climate, with temperatures generally ranging from 2°C to 9°C. Sunny days are not uncommon, especially in December and March, but expect rainy spells and foggy mornings that lend the castles a special atmosphere. What is there to do in the Loire Valley in winter?
The region offers plenty of activities all year round. In winter, cultural tours take center stage, offering visitors the chance to fully explore one of France’s richest cultural heritages.
Visit iconic castles
That is, of course, the main reason to visit the Loire Valley. In winter, the most beautiful châteaux of the Loire Valley remain open and offer the perfect conditions for a visit: fewer crowds and a more intimate atmosphere. We particularly enjoyed our visit to the Château de Chenonceau, whose arches span the Cher River in a welcome silence at this time of year. Chambord Castle, the most imposing in the region, is impressive no matter the season. The Château d'Azay-le-Rideau and its reflecting pool are also worth a visit.
To make the most of your visit, consider purchasing a multi-site pass: the Loire Valley Castles Pass and the Touraine Pass give you access to several sites at a discounted rate. You can also book tickets for each castle separately: Chenonceau, Chambord, Azay-le-Rideau, and Villandry.

Explore the villages
The Loire Valley is home to many villages that are well worth a visit in winter. We recommend Montrésor, listed among the most beautiful villages in France, whose castle overlooks the slate-roofed houses. Béhuard, perched on an island between two branches of the Loire River, offers a timeless atmosphere. Chédigny, the garden village, and Lavardin, whose ruined castle towers over the cave dwellings, round out this beautiful itinerary. You can find all our recommendations in our article on the most beautiful villages of the Loire Valley.

Discover the cave-dwelling experiences
The region between Saumur and Tours is home to a remarkable heritage of cave dwellings, carved into the soft limestone several centuries ago. These weather-protected areas are particularly well-suited for a winter visit. We really enjoyed the cave village of Rochemenier, a true testament to the underground life of days gone by. The Château de Brézé and its network of tunnels, which stretches for several kilometers beneath the moats, is a must-see. The wine cellars of Saumur, including those of Ackerman, also offer a chance to combine cultural heritage with wine tasting. A great way to warm up in winter. Check out all our ideas for cave dwellings in this article.

Explore the most beautiful cities
The Loire Valley is home to several cities whose architectural heritage alone makes a visit worthwhile. Angers, situated between the Loire and the Maine rivers, boasts a compact historic center centered around its castle and cathedral. Saumur charms visitors with its tranquil atmosphere and its castle, which overlooks the town. Tours, the most centrally located of the three, features a remarkable old quarter with half-timbered houses and lively pedestrian streets, even in winter. We enjoy these cities during the off-season for their laid-back pace and how easy it is to get around and find parking. Check out our selection in the article on the most beautiful towns in the Loire region.

Visit fascinating museums
The region's museums are a great option on cold days and offer a chance to immerse yourself in history and the arts. The Nantes Museum of Fine Arts features a diverse and high-quality collection. In Angers, the Apocalypse Tapestry housed in the castle is an exceptional example of medieval art: book your tickets now. We were also impressed by the Château-Musée de Montsoreau, which showcases contemporary art in a medieval setting. The Royal Fortress of Chinon is also worth a visit for its insight into the history of Joan of Arc.

Visit abbeys and cathedrals
The religious heritage of the Loire Valley is exceptionally rich. The Royal Abbey of Fontevraud, the former burial site of the Plantagenet kings, is one of the largest medieval abbeys in Europe and is open to visitors year-round in comfortable conditions. The Cathedral of Saint-Gatien in Tours, whose two Gothic towers overlook the city, is also a must-see. In Angers, Saint-Maurice Cathedral impresses visitors with its single nave and Romanesque stained-glass windows. We find that these buildings reveal more depth when visited off-season, without the pressure of time. Check out all our recommendations for cathedrals and abbeys in the Loire Valley.

Sleep in the warmth of a castle
Winter is the perfect time to treat yourself to a night in a castle. Rates are more affordable than during peak season, but the experience is just as wonderful: crackling fireplaces, a cozy atmosphere, and ancient stone walls that tell centuries of history.
