Best Month to Visit the Loire Valley
The Loire Valley is worth visiting any time of year, as each season brings a different atmosphere to the castles, villages, and riverbanks. Our favorite month is May, when the gardens are in full bloom and the summer crowds haven’t yet taken over the sites.
We also enjoy the mild temperatures at this time of year, which are perfect for long walks along the levees. The days are getting longer, and most castles are extending their hours of operation, which gives visitors more flexibility in planning their visits. We also recommend September for that same sense of tranquility, complemented by the excitement of the grape harvest.

When to Visit the Loire Valley - Factors to Consider

The region has a temperate oceanic climate. The average annual temperature is around 12°C. Summers are rarely sweltering, with average high temperatures around 25°C in July and August. Winter, from December through February, is cool and damp, with daytime highs around 8°C. It rains throughout the year, but it rains more frequently from October through December. - Castle Opening Hours -
Major castles such as Chambord, Chenonceau, Villandry, and Azay-le-Rideau remain open year-round. On the other hand, several smaller sites reduce their hours or close from November through March.

July and August are, unsurprisingly, the busiest months, as are the Easter and Christmas holidays. May, June, September, and October offer a much better balance between pleasant weather and reasonable crowds. - Price -
Accommodation rates naturally rise during the busiest times of the year: summer and European school vacations. Winter—excluding the holiday season—remains the most affordable time of year.

When to Visit the Loire Valley - Weather and Conditions
Climate
The climate of the Loire Valley is temperate and oceanic, moderated by the influence of the Atlantic. There are no extreme seasons: winters remain cool without being freezing, and summers are warm without being excessive. The average annual temperature is around 12°C, with January averaging around 5°C and July around 20°C.
Some summers do, however, see heat waves with temperatures exceeding 30°C, particularly when warm air masses move up from the south. We find that this generally mild climate makes the region a pleasant place to explore almost all year round. We simply recommend bringing a warm layer for the evenings, even in the summer.
Temperatures by Season
- December through February: an average of between 5°C and 9°C, with nighttime temperatures sometimes approaching 0°C
- March and April: between 9°C and 16°C, with temperatures rising quickly as soon as the sun comes out
- May and June: between 15°C and 23°C—a very pleasant time of year for all kinds of outdoor activities
- July and August: between 20°C and 26°C, with a few days when temperatures may exceed 30°C
- September and October: between 13°C and 22°C, with mild weather that often lasts into October
- November: between 8°C and 11°C—the return of cool mornings and fog along the Loire
Length of day and sunshine
The length of the day varies greatly throughout the year in the region. On December 21, the shortest day of the year, daylight lasts about 8 hours and 30 minutes. On June 21, the longest day of the year, daylight lasts more than 3 hours and 50 minutes. On average, the region enjoys about 1,835 hours of sunshine per year, peaking between June and August, when the sun shines for nearly 7.5 hours a day.
In winter, the number of hours of sunshine drops to just 2 or 3 per day, which explains the gloomier atmosphere of this season.
Rain in the Loire Valley
The region receives about 700 mm of rain per year, spread over about 100 days. So while it isn't the rainiest part of France, precipitation occurs throughout the year. Statistically, June and August are the months with the least rainfall.
October, November, and December, on the other hand, have the most rainy days, often in the form of short showers rather than long, gray days. So an umbrella or a rain jacket is still useful, even outside of winter.
The Reality of Hotels in the Loire Valley
Please note that most hotels and accommodations in the Loire Valley do not have air conditioning. It's only really hot for one or two weeks a year; the rest of the time, opening the window is enough.
If you can't stand the heat without air conditioning, don't visit in July or August, when there may be days of extreme heat.
Crowds and prizes
The Loire Valley welcomes visitors year-round, but visitor numbers vary greatly depending on the time of year. July and August are the busiest months, as are the Easter break, the long weekends in May, and the end-of-year holidays. September and October, on the other hand, remain significantly quieter, while still enjoying favorable weather conditions.
We specifically choose these two months so we can visit the major castles without having to wait in line. Accommodation prices naturally follow the same pattern: higher during peak season, more affordable during the off-season, excluding holidays.

Castles and gardens are open depending on the season
This is a key factor to consider when planning a trip to the region: not all castles follow the same schedule. The most iconic sites, such as the Château de Chambord, the Château de Chenonceau, the Château de Villandry, and the Château d'Azay-le-Rideau, remain open year-round, including during the winter months. Their hours are simply reduced during the off-season.
Other castles—often smaller or more focused on their gardens—close or severely restrict access from November through March. This is true of certain estates, such as the Château du Rivau and the Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire, where the gardens are the main attraction. We therefore always recommend checking the schedules before you leave if your trip is outside the spring or summer months.

When to See the Gardens in Bloom
The Loire Valley, often referred to as the "Garden of France," is home to some of the country's most beautifully maintained parks and gardens. The most spectacular blooming season runsfrom April to June, when the tulip beds are followed by roses and perennials, one after another.
The gardens stay green and full of flowers all summer long, though there are fewer new blooms than in the spring. And even in the fall, you can see beautiful flower beds. Castles know how to adapt to the seasons. See our article on the most beautiful gardens in the Loire Valley. For example:
- Gardens of the Château de Villandry— French-style gardens featuring a terraced layout, with an ornamental vegetable garden that is redesigned each season
- Chaumont-sur-Loire Estate— a leading destination in France for contemporary gardens, which hosts the International Garden Festival every year from April through early November
- Gardens of the Château du Rivau— fifteen remarkable gardens that preserve heirloom varieties of roses and squash
Toward the end of the season, between September and November, many of these gardens are decorated with squash and pumpkins. This is also the time when the leaves begin to change color around the ponds and moats.
We should also mention the Château de Cheverny.
It has a vast castle grounds that can be explored by golf cart and electric boat, where we were truly enchanted by the remarkable trees.
We recommend that you pay the extra fee to take a guided tour of the park and gain access to areas that are off-limits to visitors on their own.
This takes you along a path lined with impressive trees and onto a small boat with Beaucarnea trees (Elephant Trees).
And if you're lucky enough to be there during just the right week in the fall, the Beaucarnea plants turn completely red. We got there just a tiny bit too early.

When to Go Biking or Hiking
The Loire à Vélo bike route stretches nearly 900 km along the river, winding through levees, forests, and past castles. The best time to hike this trail is fromApril through October, when the ground remains dry and the days are long enough to cover several stages in a row.
July and August are still good months for cycling, but the heat and crowds on the busiest stretches make it better to ride early in the morning. The rest of the year offers great conditions for hiking, as long as you don't mind slightly cooler weather and the occasional shower.

When to Explore the Vineyards and the Grape Harvest
Wineries and vineyards are open to visitors year-round, especially the cave cellars in Saumur, which maintain a stable temperature in all seasons. But the busiest time of year is still the grape harvest, which runs from September to mid-November, depending on the appellation.
The vineyards then take on golden hues, and a special bustle fills the vineyards. Spring, among the rows of blooming grapevines, is also a great time for less crowded bike rides or walks.

When to Cruise the Loire
Trips on traditional riverboats or other boats are most common from spring through fall, when the water level of the Loire River and the weather are most favorable. Some tours are closed in winter due to the river's fluctuating flow. We recommend booking these outings between May and September to maximize your chances of enjoying a beautiful day on the water.

Exploring Cities and Towns All Year Round
The Loire Valley also boasts some beautiful towns and charming villages, which are great to visit at any time of year. Unlike gardens or vineyards, these places don't depend on a specific season to reveal their charm.
Among the cities, Angers, Saumur and Tours boast a rich architectural heritage, ranging from half-timbered houses to Renaissance facades and grand urban castles. Their museums and shopping streets are open year-round, making them great places to visit on rainy days or in the winter.

As for the villages, there are several places worth stopping at no matter the season:
- Montrésor, dominated by its castle and bordered by a river
- Béhuard, situated on an island between two branches of the Loire River
- Lavardin, where the ruins of the castle overlook the cave dwellings

The only exception worth noting is Chédigny, which is famous for its rose gardens and is much more colorful between April and June than in the middle of winter. Otherwise, fall and winter are just as good as a summer visit, with the added bonus of fewer people in the narrow streets.
Description of the Seasons in the Loire Valley
Spring in the Loire Valley
In our opinion, spring is the best time of year to explore the region. The gardens are gradually coming into bloom, from the first tulip beds to the rose gardens in late spring. Temperatures remain mild, ranging from 9°C to 20°C depending on the month, and rain showers are shorter than in winter.
The crowds haven't settled into a routine yet, except during the Easter break. We find this time of year perfect for combining visits to castles and gardens with our first bike rides.
Summer in the Loire Valley
Summer brings the longest days and the warmest temperatures, averaging around 20°C to 26°C. July and August also see the highest number of visitors, particularly around the most famous castles.
Many places then offer evening entertainment, shows, or summer markets, which add a festive touch to your stay. We recommend visiting the major castles early in the morning or late in the day to avoid the worst of the heat and the crowds.
Fall in the Loire Valley
Fall brings a noticeable return to calm in the region, while the weather often remains pleasant in September and October. The grape harvest sets the pace for this season, and several wineries are opening their doors for the occasion.
The gardens are adorned with squash and pumpkins, while some foliage is turning shades of ochre along the Loire, even though the region isn't known for its vast, colorful forests. November marks a more distinct transition into winter, with the gradual closure of certain secondary sites.
Winter in the Loire Valley
Winter offers a different, more intimate experience in a region that doesn't need sunshine to charm visitors. Visitors can tour the grand châteaux without waiting in line, villages return to their normal daily rhythm, and cities come alive for the holiday season. Temperatures generally range from 2°C to 9°C, with occasionally foggy mornings along the river.
Some secondary castles and gardens are reducing their hours or closing temporarily, which makes it a good idea to focus your trip on the major sites, cities, villages, and museums.
