How many days to visit the Châteaux de la Loire: quick answers

If you rent a car:

  • Minimum to get an overview of the most famous castles: 2 days
  • Number of days to see all the most famous castles and sites: 5 days
  • Ideal number of days to really enjoy it, in our opinion: 5 to 7 days
  • If you also want to explore vineyards, historic towns and take your time: 7 to 10 days
  • If you just want to see 2 or 3 emblematic castles on a short visit: 1 to 2 days

If you want to take public transport, you're much more limited about where you can go and when...

There is no universal answer to this question. It depends on a number of criteria. We give you more details in the article to help you make your decision.

Number of days to see castles and must-see sites

The Loire Valley boasts over 300 castles and historic homes. Not all of them merit an in-depth visit, but some 20 stand out for their architecture, gardens or historical significance. In our opinion, the must-see places are..:

  • Château de Chambord - the largest and most spectacular of the Loire castles, built under François Iᵉʳ in the XVIᵉ century. Allow half a day for the château and its grounds
  • Chenonceau Castle - nicknamed "le château des Dames", built on the Cher river. Its galleries span the river and its gardens are remarkable. Allow 2 to 3 hours for your visit
  • Château de Villandry - famous for its French-style terraced gardens. We recommend devoting at least 2 hours to it.
  • Château d'Azay-le-Rideau - set on an island in the Indre river, a refined example of Renaissance architecture
  • Château de Cheverny - famous for its furnished interiors and Tintin exhibition (it inspired the Moulinsart castle)
  • Château d'Ussé - said to have inspired Sleeping Beauty by Charles Perrault (17th-century French writer)
  • Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire - renowned for its International Garden Festival, held every year from April to November

See our top 12 most beautiful castles.

We think that in 5 days you can comfortably cover the most famous castles and enjoy the surrounding historic towns. In 2 or 3 days, you can see the absolute must-sees (Chambord, Chenonceau, Amboise, Villandry), but the pace will be steady.

Beyond the castles: towns and villages not to be missed

There's more to the Loire Valley than its châteaux. Many towns and villages are well worth your time. We particularly enjoyed wandering around the historic centers between two visits to castles. These stages add diversity to your stay and give you a better understanding of the region.

  • Tours - ideal base for exploring the region, with a lively city center, Saint-Gatien Cathedral and the medieval district around Place Plumereau
  • Amboise - small town at the foot of the royal castle, ideal for strolling along the Loire River
  • Blois - a historic town with sloping streets, dominated by its castle with four facades
  • Saumur - famous for its château overlooking the Loire, its cavalry school (the Cadre Noir) and its sparkling wine cellars
  • Chinon - medieval city on the banks of the Vienne, surrounded by famous vineyards
  • Loches - royal fortified town, less visited, whose medieval keep is one of the best preserved in France

See our selection of the most beautiful cities.

If you want to take your time exploring these cities, add 2 to 4 days to your initial schedule.

Size of region and travel time

The area of the main Loire castles stretches for around 100km from east to west, between Blois and Chinon, along the Loire and its tributaries. It's a region that's easy to reach by car, with well-maintained roads and reasonable distances.

Here are the main journey times to give you an idea:

  • Tours → Chambord: approx. 1h10
  • Tours → Chenonceau: approx. 35min
  • Tours → Amboise: approx. 30min
  • Tours → Villandry: approx. 20min
  • Tours → Blois: approx. 1h
  • Tours → Azay-le-Rideau: approx. 30min
  • Tours → Chinon: about 50min
  • Tours → Saumur: approx. 1h
  • Blois → Chambord: about 20min
  • Blois → Cheverny: about 15min
Map of the Châteaux de la Loire route

Most of the major châteaux are less than 1 hour's drive from Tours, which is the most convenient base. Blois is also a good base, especially for the castles to the east (Chambord, Cheverny, Chaumont-sur-Loire). We recommend grouping visits by geographical area to limit travel distances.

Please note: if you're coming from Paris, allow around 2h30 by car or 1h15 by TGV to Tours. From Lyon, allow around 4 hours' drive or 2.5 hours by train.

Criteria for deciding how long to spend in the Loire Valley

Budget

Evaluate how much you can afford in total, this helps you to know how many days you can stay. Budget has a direct impact on the length of your stay in this region.

A few pricing benchmarks to bear in mind:

  • Entrance to castles: expect to pay between €10 and €18 per adult for the most popular castles (Chambord: approx. €16, Chenonceau: approx. €17, Villandry: approx. €12). Some offer combined tickets. If you plan to visit many castles, the total cost of admission can be significant.
  • Accommodation: prices vary according to season and type of accommodation. In summer (high season), rates are higher. The region offers youth hostels, bed & breakfasts, self-catering cottages and hotels of various categories.
  • Transport: car rental remains the most practical way to explore the region at your own pace. Organized excursions from Tours are also available, but are generally more expensive per day.

The price range of accommodation varies between inns, gites, B&Bs and boutique hotels. So we can't give you an exact price - just look up the rates for your type of accommodation and period.

Your desires, interests and goals

Visit only the great châteaux? Discover the vineyards too? Explore historic towns on foot?
Your desires have an impact on the time you need to enjoy your destination.
For example, a complete immersion tour integrating heritage, gastronomy and nature requires more days than a tour focusing on castles alone.

In the Loire Valley, the offer is rich and varied:

  • Numerous castles and historic monuments:
    very high
  • Numerous characterful towns and villages:
    high
  • Numerous vineyards and wineries:
very high (Vouvray, Chinon, Bourgueil, Saumur-Champigny, Muscadet, Touraine appellations). The Loire is one of France's largest wine-growing regions
  • Numerous hikes and nature walks:
moderate (Loire banks, Chambord forest, Cher valley, "Loire à Vélo" for cycle touring)
  • Numerous gastronomic venues:
    high
  • Lots of outdoor activities:
moderate (boat trips on the Cher, hot-air ballooning, "Loire à Vélo")

We've found that alternating between châteaux visits, city walks and breaks in the vineyards helps to vary the pleasures and avoid "château fatigue" - a common phenomenon if you string too many similar visits together over a short period of time.

Visa

France is part of the Schengen area. If your passport is issued by a country outside the Schengen area, the classic tourist visa authorizes you to travel within the Schengen area for a maximum of 90 days out of a 180-day period. Don't forget to apply online before you leave!

For EU and Swiss nationals, no visa is required.

Personal circumstances

Take into account your own schedule, including work commitments and personal responsibilities. This helps you realistically assess how much time you can devote to the trip.

If you're traveling with your family, plan on a slower pace. Some châteaux offer special tours for children (Chambord, for example, organizes treasure hunts, while Cheverny has an exhibition on Tintin). We recommend limiting visits to a maximum of 2 castles per day to avoid fatigue, especially if you're traveling with your family. See the best castles with children.

Weather, conditions, seasons

The season has a direct influence on the Loire Valley experience. Here are some things to consider:

  • April to June: the ideal period in our opinion. The gardens are in bloom, temperatures are pleasant (15°C to 25°C) and visitor numbers are still reasonable, especially in April-May. The Festival des Jardins de Chaumont usually opens in April.
  • July-August: peak tourist season. Temperatures can exceed 35°C in some years. The best-known castles (Chambord, Chenonceau) are very busy: long queues are possible, especially around 11am. Advantage: many sound and light shows take place in the evening (especially at Chambord and Amboise).
  • September-October: excellent period. Temperatures remain mild, crowds diminish and vineyards are in the midst of harvesting. Autumn colors embellish gardens
  • November to March: low season. Some castles may reduce their opening hours or close temporarily (check in advance). In return, accommodation rates are lower and you can enjoy the area without the crowds.

The weather doesn't affect the length of your stay as such, but it can change the content of your days. Come rain or shine, visits to the interiors of châteaux and wine cellars really come into their own. When the weather's fine, the Villandry gardens or a bike ride along the Loire become highlights of your stay.

Means of transport

The means of transport you choose influences the number of castles you can see per day, and therefore the total length of your stay:

  • By car: the most flexible. You can easily visit 2-3 castles a day, stopping off at villages or vineyards along the way. Parking is generally available near the castles (free or paying, depending on the site).
  • By train + bus/shuttle: Tours and Blois are well served by TGV. From both towns, seasonal shuttles run to certain châteaux (Chambord line from Blois, for example). However, the local bus network is limited - without a car, allow 1 to 2 extra days to cover the same sites.
  • By bike: the "Loire à Vélo" is a 900km signposted cycle route along the river. It's a pleasant way to discover the region, but slower. Allow at least 7 days to cover the main castles by bike
  • Organized excursions: day tours from Tours or Paris enable you to see 2 or 3 châteaux in a single day. It's practical if you only have 1 or 2 days, but the program is imposed and time on each site is limited.

Frequently asked questions

Is 2 days enough to visit the Châteaux de la Loire?

In 2 days, you can see 2 to 4 of the most famous châteaux - for example Chambord and Chenonceau on the first day, Amboise and Villandry on the second. It's a satisfying overview, but the pace is dense and you won't have time to explore the towns and vineyards.

Is 3 days enough to visit the Châteaux de la Loire?

With 3 days, you can cover 5 or 6 major châteaux and take some time to wander around Amboise or Blois. It's a decent length for a first stay focused on castles. However, we recommend adding at least one or two days if you also wish to explore the vineyards or cycle around the region.

Is 5 days enough for the Loire Valley?

With 5 days, we reckon you can see the best-known châteaux, explore 2-3 towns and incorporate a half-day tasting in the vineyards. It's a duration that allows a good balance between cultural visits and more relaxed moments.

Is 7 days too long for the Loire Valley?

No, it's not too long. The region has enough to keep you busy for a whole week, with its castles, historic towns, vineyards, local markets and bike and boat trips. With 7 days, you can also visit lesser-known sites such as Loches, the Château de Langeais or the troglodyte dwellings of the Loir Valley - stops that provide another perspective on the region.

How many castles can you visit in a day?

In general, 2 castles a day is a comfortable pace, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the interiors, gardens and surroundings. 3 castles a day are possible if the sites are close together (e.g. Chambord, Cheverny and Chaumont are in the same area), but the day will be long and visually exhausting. Beyond 2, fatigue sets in and visits lose quality.

Do I need a car to visit the Châteaux de la Loire?

The car is the most practical way to explore the region freely. Without a car, you can rely on seasonal shuttles from Blois or Tours, organized excursions or cycling. It can be done, but you'll need to allow more time and more careful planning for your travels.
