Did you know that the town of Amboise was a medieval city much sought-after by the kings of France since the early Renaissance? This is evidenced by the many châteaux in and around the heart of the town, including the Château Royal d'Amboise and Clos-Lucé, the former home of the painter, architect, inventor and theoretician Leonardo da Vinci.
It's one of the most popular places to stay in the Loire Valley! In our opinion, it's a good starting point for visiting many of the Loire castles within a 1-hour drive.

Staying near Amboise
Enjoying the calm and greenery of Amboise's neighboring communes is certainly a strong argument for choosing the area in which to stay! We slept in exceptional places like castles in the heart of immense natural parks. You'll be close to both the Indre-et-Loire country roads and the nearby Châteaux de la Loire, as well as to bucolic walks. More poetic places, less frequented, but above all with panoramas not to be missed!
Benefits:

- Close to must-see sites such as Château Gaillard, the most Italian of the Loire Valley, or the Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire and its sublime château.

Other useful tips to keep in mind
- Book your accommodation as soon as possible by looking at the best-rated establishments in Amboise. Whether you're a fan of art, film or music, summer and autumn are the perfect times to enjoy a wide range of events in the region. An ideal opportunity to discover local culture and artistic dynamism, such as the music festivals "Les Courants" and "Quinte et Sens". But when it comes to events, there's always the risk of a huge influx of tourists!
- Amboise is also one of the most sought-after towns in the region! It's also a great starting point for visiting the Châteaux of the Loire Valley, but we strongly recommend renting a car if you don't have one, to give you more freedom of movement.
- As the streets of the historic center can be narrow and difficult to navigate by car, we recommend parking in one of the parking lots outside the city center and walking to the main sights. Park and explore Amboise on foot!
- Get around as much as you can by bike to take advantage of our pleasant, unspoilt environment. Take comfortable shoes, however, as some streets are cobbled and steep.
- Taste local gastronomy and wine in Amboise's 15th-century troglodyte caves!

And in this ancient medieval city in the Loire Valley, we found what we were looking for at Hôtel Le Choiseul, at the foot of the Château Royal d'Amboise. Tapestries and antique furniture decorate rooms that are both authentic and contemporary. We appreciated the attention to detail, such as the assortment of colorful patterns that adorned the walls, curtains, bedspread, pillowcase and lampshades in our room.

Château de Chissay is a 20-minute drive from Amboise. This authentic Renaissance château has been transformed into a hotel-restaurant. Castle of Cheverny
A 45-minute drive from Amboise, Château de Cheverny was built in the 17th century. But it became part of the history of Loire castles when comic book author Hergé used it as inspiration for the famous Château de Moulinsart, where Tintin was held prisoner before becoming the property of the volcanic Captain Haddock. In addition to a museum dedicated to these paper characters, we were delighted by the château's vast park, which can be visited by buggy and electric boat, with its remarkable trees. If you'd like to spend a night in this legendary château, the Suites du Château de Cheverny welcome you in modern, comfortable surroundings.
