Is Hôtel Le Choiseul worth it? Our review
If you're looking for accommodation in Amboise's historic center that's both peaceful and refined, Hôtel Le Choiseul is an ideal option. We particularly liked the old-fashioned charm of the premises and the warm welcome from the staff. Finally, the hotel is perfectly located in Amboise to take advantage of the city's treasures, as well as being close to the other Châteaux of the Loire Valley.
Decoration and atmosphere
We appreciated the hotel's hushed charm. The warm decor is inspired by the codes of historic residences: refined, abundant motifs, antique furniture, noble materials...
You almost feel like you're living the Château life!
Yet the atmosphere remains intimate, and the discreet, attentive service contributes to this feeling of tranquillity.
And let's not forget the Italian-style gardens, adorned with sculptures and small groves, offering a bucolic pause during your visit to Amboise. Ivy on the facades adds a touch of poetry!
The room
Designed like a jewel box, our room was both comfortable and spacious, with understated yet refined decor. We particularly appreciated the noble materials, from the wood of the headboard to the marble of the fireplace, and the powdery tones, giving the whole a soothing atmosphere.
We love the old-fashioned total look with the powder-toned, plant-patterned wallpaper covering the walls and curtains! A few artistic touches complete the picture (a romantic painting and a finely crafted mirror).

The bathroom
In our room, the bathroom included a bathtub, where we could relax after a long day of sightseeing in Amboise. We liked the harmony of the materials, between the marble on the walls and the marbled tiles on the floor.
The breakfast
In the morning, breakfast can be enjoyed in the elegant dining room or on the sunny terrace. We were impressed by the variety of the sweet buffet, with its pastries, fresh fruit, different flavours of yoghurt and jams, not to mention the countless pastries (chocolate fondant, lemon cake, pancakes and crêpes)! We warn you, it's going to be hard to choose!
Equipment and common areas
There's nothing like a moment of relaxation after a busy day of sightseeing! You can enjoy the outdoor swimming pool in season, or relax in the garden at the end of the day.
For activity-lovers, the Hotel Le Choiseul has something for everyone! They offer cooking classes, tours of the local history and, for sports enthusiasts, badminton and table tennis equipment!
The restoration
We didn't have time to try out the cuisine at Restaurant Le 36, but the dining room, set between stone and greenery, immediately charmed us. Nestled between terraced gardens and ancient troglodytic cellars on the hillside, the Choiseul restaurant, run by chef Lionel Arnaud since 2023, offers gourmet French cuisine inspired by his travels. A promising address featuring many Loire wines on its menu!
You'll also find a cocooning bar area where we enjoyed the variety of digestifs!
History
Hôtel Le Choiseul occupies three residences dating from the 15th and 18th centuries: the Maison de l'Ermite, the Maison du Duc and the Maison de l'Apothicaire. These buildings, steeped in history, have welcomed a hermit who came to bless King Louis XI, a minister of Louis XV, and the herbalist to the queens of France. The premises were taken over in 2023 to launch a hotel business while preserving its rich heritage, including the impressive Granaries of Caesar dug into the rock.
The facility is currently being renovated and is scheduled to reopen in 2026.

How to get there
Amboise is located in the Centre-Val de Loire region, between Tours and Blois, and is easily accessible by car via the A10 freeway from Paris or Bordeaux, or the A85 from Nantes.
The town is also well served by rail. It takes around 1h40 from Paris, 2h15 from Nantes and 25 minutes from Tours. From Amboise train station, it's a 20-minute walk or 5-minute cab ride to Hôtel Le Choiseul.
