Where to stay in Tours: best districts
Why stay in Tours?
Did you know that Tours has been the capital of France 3 times in the course of history? A dynamic city classified as a "Ville d'art et d'histoire" (find out more here) and capital of the Loire Valley, Tours unsurprisingly boasts a rich historical and cultural heritage. An ancient Gallo-Roman city and medieval town, Tours is now a pleasant metropolis offering an unspoilt living environment, ideally located between the Loire and Cher rivers.
It's one of the most popular places to stay in the Loire Valley! In our opinion, it's a good starting point for visiting many of the Loire castles within a 1-hour drive.
Tours' best places to stay: map
Here's our map to help you get your bearings, with the main areas to stay in Tours:
Sleep in Vieux-Tours near the Cathedral
With its narrow cobbled streets and medieval half-timbered buildings, Vieux-Tours is a lively, hyper-central district. You'll find plenty of shops, restaurants and brasseries. We loved staying there, as most of the buildings have real character and the cultural and historical points of interest are very close by.
Benefits:
- Hypercentre, historic district
- Close to the Cathédrale Saint-Gatien, numerous museums such as the Beaux-Arts, Compagnonnage and Histoire Naturelle museums.
- A 10-minute walk from Les Halles de Tours, a covered market with mouth-watering stalls selling local produce.
Disadvantages:
- Noise: busy Tours area
- Parking is difficult because the streets are narrow and the neighborhood is mainly pedestrian.
- Higher cost of certain accommodations
Our favorite hotels:
- Hotel Les Trésorières - see photos and availability
- Hotel Ferdinand - see photos and availability
- Hotel L'Adresse - see photos and availability
- Hôtel Mirabeau - see photos and availability
Staying in the Centre Gare district of Tours
A lively district where old town houses blend with newer buildings, the Centre near Tours train station is also an area to consider if you're staying in the city. You'll be close to the train station that connects many destinations by train, and you'll enjoy a host of amenities: public transport, cinemas, stores and restaurants.
Benefits:
- Close to Tours train station
- Accessible public transport: bus, tramway lines
- Easy parking on the streets and in the surrounding parking lots
- Close to the famous Jardin des Prébendes d'Oé
Disadvantages:
- Noise: busy Tours area
- Traffic jams with lots of passing vehicles and public transport
Our favorite hotels:
- Hotel Oceania L'Univers Tours - see photos and availability
- Hotel Gîte Central Parc Tours - see photos and availability
- Hotel Best Western Plus L'Artiste - see photos and availability
Stay in the immediate vicinity (on the banks of the Loire or the Cher)
Staying near one of the 2 rivers that surround the city of Tours, on the banks of the Loire or the Cher, means enjoying quieter neighborhoods. You'll be close to roads such as La Savonnière, which takes you to the nearby Châteaux de la Loire, as well as to riverside walks. More poetic places, less frequented, but above all with panoramas not to be missed!
Benefits:
- Magnificent views over the banks of the Loire and Cher rivers
- Numerous cycle paths
- Nice walks to do
- Areas away from the hustle and bustle of the city center
- Not far from the poetic Prieuré Saint-Cosme
- Route de la Savonnière easily accessible to Château de Villandry
Disadvantages:
- Away from the city's main attractions
- Need a car or bike to get around more easily
- Less choice of accommodation
Our favorite hotels:
- Château de Belmont Tours The Crest Collection - view photos and availability
- Hilton Inn Tours Centre Hotel (4 stars) - see photos and availability
- Hotel Castel Fleuri (3 stars) - see photos and availability
Other useful tips to keep in mind
- Book your accommodation as early as possible by looking at the top-rated establishments in Tours. The summer season brings many festivals to the region, an ideal opportunity to discover the local culture and artistic dynamism. But when it comes to events, there's always the risk of a huge influx of tourists!
- Tours is also a very popular tourist destination in the region! It's also a great starting point for visiting the Châteaux of the Loire Valley, but we strongly recommend renting a car if you don't have one, to give you more freedom of movement.
- In the historic center, the alleyways are sometimes narrow, and part of the city center is pedestrianized, so traffic can sometimes be a little dense or complex if you venture into this area with your vehicle.
- Get around as much as you can by bike to take advantage of our pleasant, unspoilt environment. The city of Tours is very well equipped for 2-wheelers, with numerous cycle paths. You can even visit some castles by bike.
- Taste the local gastronomy and discover the famous Touraine wine route. Some châteaux tours include wine tasting!
OUR TIPS FOR RENTING A CAR IN Loire
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars - one of the best rated sites.
- Choose a fairly compact car (many villages have narrowed the road).
- Think aboutfull insurance (parking in big cities is really tight).
- There is a lot of demand, book it early.
