It's a unique opportunity to learn more about combat tactics, military engineering and the impact of armored vehicles on the battlefield. Our review<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our opinion, the Pierre et Lumi\u00e8re troglodyte site in Saumur is one of a kind! It offers a fascinating insight into the region's underground history. Walking through its rock-cut galleries, we went back in time several centuries.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You'll admire captivating sculptures, staging and lighting effects that highlight the exceptional character of this troglodytic heritage. Did you know about the stone-cutting woodpecker?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tours Cathedral: <\/strong>we were fascinated by the miniature reproduction of this religious edifice. The lacework on the fa\u00e7ade was stunningly realistic! The bluish lighting made the cathedral all the more impressive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The cave with coloured walls:<\/strong> before ending your visit, you'll pass through a room bursting with color. White tuffeau stone has been combined with the blue-grey slate of the Angers basin to create a spectacular finish!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Vallee-loire\/n-XkSzNF\/Saumur\/Pierre-et-Lumi%C3%A8re\/i-Lg7CnGc\/0\/CvRz6QDKsRs7zh6b7RNc3DWDxjNCMXHfLsHtRt2wC\/L\/pierre%20lumiere%20saumur-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"Parc Troglodyte Pierre et Lumi&#xE8;re - inside\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Useful tips<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Allow 1 to 1h30 to visit the underground miniature park and museum.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To get to the site from downtown, you'll need a car (12min drive).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A former troglodyte park, the ground is sometimes uneven, and some passages narrow. You'll have to travel beneath darkened underground galleries. We do not recommend this activity if you suffer from claustrophobia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you're chilly, bring a sweater with you, as the temperature in the cellars is low.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A fun activity for the whole family: at the end of the day, children can even try their hand at sculpture!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Price: \u20ac9 full price, combined ticket options with the Mushroom Museum<br\/>and\/or the Jardin du Puygirault. Museum of Modern Art (Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud)<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why visit it? Our review<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In May 2021, the Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud opened the doors of its Museum of Modern Art. Following a donation of more than 800 works to the State and the Pays de la Loire Region, the museum has come to life.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martine and L\u00e9on Cligman gave the monastic town a new cultural lease of life. The couple, passionate about art, collected throughout their lives paintings, drawings and sculptures by 19th and 20th century artists, as well as antiques and objects from outside Europe. Here are our 3 favorite moments:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cephalomorphic funerary masks:<\/strong> we were intrigued by these strange and mysterious-looking works. 2 of them come from Peru and date from between 900 and 1200.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Germaine Richier collection: <\/strong>her humanoid sculptures directly reminded us of those by the artist Giacommetti (visible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondation-giacometti.fr\/fr\/biographie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">here<\/a>). As you wander through the various rooms of this majestic building, you'll be immersed in equine history and the decorative arts through the centuries.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We explored unique collections and period settings. The exhibition, dedicated to the world of the horse, features saddles, tack, stirrups, equestrian artworks and accessories. It has been awarded the \"Mus\u00e9e de France\" label.
