We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Loire Valley Castles in 4 days: what you need to know<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is 4 days enough?<\/h3>\n\n<p>With 5 days, you'll have time to discover a variety of ch\u00e2teaux along the Loire, as well as pretty villages and town centers. End in Saumur<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day 1 - Chambord and Blois<\/h3>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Morning and noon: Ch\u00e2teau de Chambord<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n<p>The most <strong>imposing<\/strong> and surely the most <strong>famous<\/strong> of the Loire Ch\u00e2teaux, Ch\u00e2teau de Chambord was commissioned by Fran\u00e7ois <sup>I<\/sup> on his return from the victorious battle of Marignan to demonstrate the power of France.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Vallee-loire\/Liste-chateaux-Loire\/i-Ws5XTCf\/2\/10101fef\/L\/Chateau%20Chambord-L.jpg\" alt=\"front view of Ch&#xE2;teau de Chambord with the canal in the foreground\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Main points of interest:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The double spiral staircase<\/strong>: This staircase allowed people to go up and down without ever passing each other, thanks to its two distinct spirals, and served the different floors of the ch\u00e2teau. It blends craftsmanship, finesse of decoration and a sense of pageantry, a typical Renaissance alliance. Some attribute this achievement to Leonardo da Vinci.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The terraces: <\/strong>The castle's terraces offer a breathtaking view of the surrounding park and its forests, which for a long time were dedicated to hunting, but which (like us!) you can now safely explore by bike.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Northwest tower chapel<\/strong>: This <sup>16th-century<\/sup> chapel in the castle's northwest tower features Romanesque vaults and subtle <sup>19th-century<\/sup> stained glass windows. It is also regularly referred to as the<strong>\"Ch\u00e2teau des dames<\/strong>\", as it owes its layout to the great female figures of French history: Diane de Poitiers (favorite of Henri II), Cath\u00e9rine de M\u00e9dicis and Louise de Lorraine.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Vallee-loire\/Liste-chateaux-Loire\/i-qfVzL9J\/2\/224ed8c9\/L\/Chateau%20Chenonceau-L.jpg\" alt=\"View of Chenonceau castle with its arches over the Cher river, and the reflection of the castle in the river.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Main points of interest:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The gallery:<\/strong> 60 meters long, this ballroom seems to float above the river Cher. Take the time to admire the view from the 18 bays that give it its incomparable light. Magic!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Diane de Poitiers garden:<\/strong> in addition to the interest of this Italian-style garden, it offers one of the finest views, in our opinion, of the ch\u00e2teau and the 5 arches spanning the river.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Queen's apothecary:<\/strong> unique in the Loire castles, we owe it to Catherine de M\u00e9dicis, who never travelled without her physicians and perfumers.
