Our opinion:<\/h3>\n\n<p>The castle of Nantes is remarkable in more than one way:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For the <strong>variety of its architecture<\/strong>: from 15th-century defensive structures<sup>to <\/sup>Renaissance palaces, not forgetting the grand staircase inherited from Louis XIV, the Ch\u00e2teau de Nantes is a real plunge into the history of French architecture.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For its <strong>historical interest<\/strong>: marked by Anne of Brittany, only queen married successively to 2 kings of France, the castle of Nantes is the place of the signature of the definitive attachment of Brittany to the crown of France in 1532.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For its <strong>museum of the History of Nantes:<\/strong> a surprising museum with a particularly careful scenography, which will take you from the great maritime epics to the contemporary history of the city, without forgetting the dark hours of the city, in particular the slave trade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Vallee-loire\/Chateau-de-Nantes\/i-KvbMXd3\/0\/195778f6\/L\/chateau-nantes-1-L.jpg\" alt=\"View of the house of the castle of Nantes\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The house of the castle of Nantes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is the Ch\u00e2teau de Nantes famous?<\/h3>\n\n<p>The castle of Nantes is famous for having been the \"castle of Anne de Bretagne\".<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Vallee-loire\/Chateau-de-Nantes\/i-jqMRTmT\/0\/8e588e58\/L\/BNF_-_Latin_9474_-_Jean_Bourdichon_-_Grandes_Heures_d%27Anne_de_Bretagne_-_f._3r_-_Anne_de_Bretagne_entre_trois_saintes_%28d&#xE9;tail%29-L.jpg\" alt=\"Portrait of Anne of Brittany by Jean Bourdichon\" style=\"width:300px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Anne of Brittany by Jean Bourdichon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Daughter of the Duke of Brittany,<strong> Fran\u00e7ois II<\/strong>, who had the new castle of Nantes built, she made a considerable mark on French history. Promised and betrothed by her father to no fewer than 7 European princes (the first time, when she was just 4), she married Maximilian <sup>I<\/sup> of Hasburg, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, by proxy in 1490. The king of France seeing a threat, he besieged the city of Rennes and Anne of Brittany was finally married by the grace of a treaty of Peace between Brittany and France, to <strong>Charles VIII<\/strong>, king of France, on December 6, 1491.  <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/5\/5f\/Portrait_of_King_Charles_VIII_of_France_%281470%E2%80%931498%29%2C_by_anonymous_artist%2C_16th_century_%28cropped%29.jpg\" alt=\"Portrait of Charles VIII\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:300px;height:374px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Portrait of Charles VIII<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>After his accidental death in the castle of Blois, she married his successor and cousin, <strong>Louis XII<\/strong> on December 6, 1491. Provided for in the marriage contract, this provision was intended to guarantee peace between Brittany and the Kingdom of France. Nantes became one of the places of residence of the Dukes of Brittany.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Vallee-loire\/Nantes\/Nantes-ville\/i-HP8ZXFW\/0\/fa54de18\/L\/nantes-chateau-moyen-age-L.jpg\" alt=\"The remains of the medieval castle\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The remains of the medieval castle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Renaissance<\/strong>: In 1460, Fran\u00e7ois II ordered the construction of the new castle of Nantes which will mark the transition between the medieval and renaissance periods. His daughter, Anne of Brittany, will make it definitively enter the renaissance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Revolution<\/strong>: abandoned by the Kings of France, the castle of Nantes becomes successively <strong>prison<\/strong> and <strong>barracks<\/strong>. fortifications, the flamboyance of the houses<\/h2>\n\n<p>The Ch\u00e2teau de Nantes is rich in paradoxes: built in the <sup>15th<\/sup> century, it stands at the crossroads of the late <strong>Middle Ages<\/strong> and the <strong>Renaissance<\/strong>. It will therefore combine a defensive function and a vocation as a residential palace, with elements of Gothic and Renaissance architecture.<\/p>\n\n<p>We propose you some elements which marked us:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the 15-metre-high <strong>harbour tower<\/strong>, recognizable by the machicolations in the middle of the Breton-style tower. At the top, a large terrace offers a beautiful view of the city!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Vallee-loire\/Chateau-de-Nantes\/i-9bcxFzH\/0\/b2c6cf05\/L\/chateau-nantes-tour-port-L.jpg\" alt=\"View of the port tower\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Port Tower<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>old keep<\/strong> features the irregular polygonal layout so characteristic of the 14th and <sup>15th<\/sup> centuries. This evolution translates the passage from the rectangular medieval defensive keeps (more solid and offering less surface to the enemy fire) to the round towers of the renaissance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Vallee-loire\/Chateau-de-Nantes\/i-VpphKC3\/0\/ebafa5dd\/L\/chateau-nantes-vieux-donjon-conciergerie-L.jpg\" alt=\"View of the old XIIIth century keep\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The old dungeon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>horseshoe tower<\/strong>: 30 m long and 18 m wide, in the shape of a horseshoe. It is an artillery bastion on 3 floors located at the north-east corner of the castle facing the old bed of the Loire. Built by Fran\u00e7ois II, its facade on the courtyard side is sculpted in the flamboyant gothic style under Anne de Bretagne. So called because it originally housed the bakery in its basement, this tower will serve mainly as a jail with a gloomy reputation over the centuries. Its covered parapet walk was built in the <sup>17th<\/sup> century.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Vallee-loire\/Chateau-de-Nantes\/i-dWgGgBW\/0\/aded12f2\/L\/chateau-nantes-tour-boulangerie-L.jpg\" alt=\"Bakery tower and access to the castle\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">View of the Bakery Tower<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>without forgetting the <strong>tower of the river<\/strong>, particularly well preserved. The popular tradition wants Anne of Brittany to be born there, which is chronologically impossible. If you look closely (well, from the courtyard, but carefully), you will see that no two are identical (size and pattern), even though they all have the same composition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Vallee-loire\/Chateau-de-Nantes\/i-8GbJXTq\/0\/ab9b6187\/L\/chateau-nantes-grand-logis-lucarnes-L.jpg\" alt=\"The dormer windows of the Grand Logis\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The dormer windows of the Grand Logis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>loggias of the golden crown tower<\/strong> <strong>: <\/strong> certainly one of the masterpieces of the architecture of the castle of Nantes. Commissioned by Anne of Brittany, their design is particularly atypical, borrowing from the Italian Renaissance, but also from the Gothic heritage! <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Vallee-loire\/Chateau-de-Nantes\/i-d2TmXPM\/0\/e77ad2de\/L\/chateau-nantes-loggia-tour-couronne-or-L.jpg\" alt=\"Loggias of the golden crown tower\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The loggias of the golden crown tower<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The classical fa\u00e7ade <\/strong>of the Great Government. This part of the dwelling has particularly suffered over the centuries. Completed in the early 1480s, the house was first partially destroyed by a terrible fire in the 17th century. Rebuilt under Louis XIV in a classical style, it lost one of its wings (which connected it to the conciergerie) during the terrible explosion of the Spanish tower, which had been transformed into a powder magazine, on May 25, 1800.
