Yes, Fleury Abbey is well worth a visit. The basilica alone offers a comprehensive overview of Romanesque art, from the 11th-century porch tower to the crypt that houses the relics of Saint Benedict. We also enjoyed continuing our exploration at the Belv\u00e9d\u00e8re, where the scale models shed light on the site\u2019s history. It\u2019s one of the most beautiful in the Loire Valley<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n

Why is Fleury Abbey famous?<\/h3>\n\n

The abbey is, above all, the guardian of the relics of Saint Benedict of Nursia, an Italian monk who wrote the rule followed by the Benedictines in the 6th century. Their arrival from Monte Cassino, Italy, brought fame to the monastery, so much so that the village took the name Saint-Beno\u00eet-sur-Loire. <\/p>\n\n

In the 10th and 11th centuries, Fleury also became a major intellectual center of the West: its abbot, Abbon, was considered the most learned man of his time. Finally, it is worth noting the tomb of King Philip I, who was buried in the choir in 1108. The abbey is also located in the part of the Loire Valley that has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.<\/p>\n\n
